Cry Baby is, singer songwriter, Melanie Martinez's debut album. Cry Baby is an indy, electropop concept album which was released on August 14, 2015 by Atlantic Records. The ironic naming of songs and incorporation of emotional imbalance, abuse, deceit, and other ambitious themes left me shocked and anxious to get my hands on the lyrics.

Many people will recognize Melanie Martinez as a 2012 contestant on the voice. After five weeks on Adam Levine's team she was eliminated and began to work on her solo career. She released her debut single, "Dollhouse" on April 22, 2014 with a music video released May 2016. She announced her debut, Dollhouse, which was released on May 19, 2014. The lead single for the album, "Pity Party", was released on June 2, 2015. "Soap", was released on July 10, "Sippy Cup", was the sequel to "Dollhouse", and was released on July 31, 2015. Her song "Carousel" was featured on American Horror Story: Freak Show as part of the theme song.

As mentioned earlier, Cry Baby is a concept album. In an Interview with Billboard, Melanie Martinez says that Cry Baby is an alter-ego of hers. Many of the songs are about her as a child and then fabricated to become more of a story. The album follows her growth as a person dealing with the harsh realities of life and being able to feel comfortable in your own skin.

In her song "Mrs. Potato Head" she sings, "Don't be dramatic, its only some plastic. No one will love you if your unattractive," which deals with not feeling comfortable in your skin and doing all that you can to achieve the perfect aesthetic. Pain is beauty, right? The song, "Dollhouse", deals with putting on a mask or facade to hide your true colours and feelings from the world. Melanie sings, "Places, places, get in your places. Throw on your dress and put on your doll faces. Everyone thinks that we're perfect. Please don't let them look through the curtains."

Her songs; "Cry Baby", "Dollhouse", "Pity Party", "Mrs. Potato Head", "Soap" and "Training Wheels" are personal favourites of mine. The track "Milk and Cookies" is one of my least favourite songs on the album and doesn't seem to be written at the same level as the other songs.

Overall, Melanie Martinez's Album, Cry Baby, is an ambitious and interesting concept album worth listening to. Out of 10 stars, I would rate the album at a

7.8/8.
